Ever thought that a high performer in your team who is just a touch ‘geeky’ or ‘socially clunky’ or let’s face it – downright rude – could be neurodiverse? Being neurodivergent(ND) means having a brain that works differently from the average or “neurotypical (NT)” person. ND leaders have unique perspectives and strengths, but they may face challenges in navigating social norms and communication styles that are geared toward NT individuals. However, we all need to connect sometimes, and someone who is Autistic, has ADHD, dyslexia, Tourettes, etc, doesn’t necessarily connect in the same way as NT people – in fact, it can be quite overwhelming for them, which is why they often prefer working alone.
As a NT coach who has first-hand experience of dealing with autism, having an autistic son, I have a good understanding of the struggles: sensory overload; lack of eye contact; struggle with change; social isolation; and potential workplace bullying. Of course, as NTs we need to have an open mind about how we accommodate diverse strengths in all individuals. My area of specialism is in helping people who are neurodiverse connect more comfortably with those who are neurotypical.
