Relationship Counselling for Couples

  • Marriage Counselling in Southampton

    At least fifty percent of Relationship Specialist work is given over to working with couples. You might be married or in a partnership; in a heterosexual, gay or lesbian relationship. You may even be in a family relationship – such as father and daughter – or indeed a business partnership.

    It doesn’t matter. The challenges, frustrations – and even the joy when we get it right, are the same whatever relationship we are in.

    Relationship and couples counselling will be useful whatever stage of the relationship you are in:

    • Whether you are about to get married;
    • You have been in a long-term happy partnership for years and just want a MOT;
    • One of you is about to retire, or
    • Your relationship is in crisis...

    ...a conversation with a professional practitioner can be really helpful.

  • Relationship Specialist

    We all tend to change over time – how we think, feel and respond to certain triggers. Even if these patterns of behaviour were respected at one time in a relationship, many of us often get to a point where these changes in our partner don’t work for us anymore. This can have a seriously detrimental effect on sleep, diet and health.

    In essence, counselling is ‘just a chat’. In listening to you both, I will lead you through a process so you know how to deal with your situation with greater self-awareness. The aim will be to give you both confidence to make changes where it truly counts, or indeed about decisions you take going forward.

  • First Appointment - The Assessment

    You have made the decision to get support, so the process with me starts with an 'assessment.' This is an informal conversation to elicit the situation as each of you sees it and lasts 1.5hrs. There is also an opportunity to ask questions and give you more information on how the 'repair process' will work. The purpose of the assessment is for the two of you to decide what you want for your relationship going forward. Often it's a useful time just to feel heard and consider the first steps.

  • The Sessions

    The sessions last 1.5 hours and will be spaced 2-3 weeks apart. Some of the sessions will be used to teach you tools to challenge your thinking and develop new conversation skills. Others will be reviewing the relationship as you see it progress.

What our Clients Say

  • Me and my partner did a six-week stint of relationship counselling with Alison. As a man I was doubtful that anything would work but was willing to give it a try. Despite my skepticism, Alison was reassuring and compassionate with large amounts of knowledge and experience. She helped us with coping mechanisms which has enabled me and my partner to communicate and reconnect once again. Would highly recommend Alison to anyone in need of gaining that spark back. Thank you!

  • It’s obvious to me that what we’re currently experiencing will not be a constant but feel confident that we now possess the basic (at least) tools to carry on coming together whilst learning from, and growing together as life partners. I will miss our sessions as I (sort of) enjoyed the safety of experiencing uncomfortable growth - it actually felt a bit magical.

    Daniel Scrivener
  • Working with Alison has been very helpful. My partner and I only had a couple of sessions but it has made a huge difference and really helped us improve our communication. Going into counselling can be daunting but right from the start Alison put us at ease and helped us feel comfortable to open up. Thank you so much Alison, we would definitely come back again if we felt we needed a top up!

  • I’ve just spent the last 2 days with Alison leading and facilitating Leadership Training. I’ve taken away several learnings that will enable to improve as a leader. She’s an excellent listener and had several models and structure to help manage situations in a positive manner. She is a first class coach and I highly recommend Alison for executive coaching.

  • Critically, the conversations we had about the ‘relationship I have with myself’ helped me challenge some unhelpful assumptions which were holding me back. Alison’s skill is to navigate conflict, connection and collaboration and help individuals develop confidence to know their strengths, work out how to accentuate them and increase their influence and impact within and outside of an organisation.

  • Alison coached me for 2 years. During this time I learned a lot and improved in a number of areas. Alison is a great listener and always has an informative model to help structure thinking and learning. A brilliant coach and now a good friend I highly recommend Alison for executive coaching.
